After studying dozens of supermarkets in 6 Latin American countries during the year 2023, the Veg Foundation revealed which are the 10 retailers with the most vegan products. The study was conducted in six Latin American countries (Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru), and the countries with the most vegan options and products in this region were Chile and Mexico. The study covered 82 branches of 27 supermarkets in 17 cities.

The retailers that occupied the top five positions in the ranking were Líder (CL) with 377 products, Fresko (MX) with 368 products, Jumbo (CL) with 298 products, Walmart Express (MX) with 248 products, and Walmart (MX) with 226 products.

Gianfranco Canessa, Coordinator of the Vegan Ranking of Supermarkets in Latin America, said, “The final evaluation of the project initially shows a positive trend: supermarkets in the region are expanding their range of vegan products, testing new options and attracting customers through engaging communication. Compared to the 2022 ranking, we can observe significant improvements in companies that are taking a firm approach to the vegan issue. However, the evaluation also shows that a good vegan offer in Latin American retailers is not yet a reality.”

Ignacia Uribe, Director of the Veg Foundation, said, “Today in Chile there are around 100 brands certified by us and in MX 52 companies, including more than 1,500 certified vegan products in the market. We will continue to conduct this ranking every year and will continue to work hand in hand with retailers to help them expand their offering of certified vegan products; according to a study we carried out together with IPSOS, 86% of Chileans believe that it is important for vegan products to have an official certification such as the V-Label”.
