The vegan Puerto Rican athlete Anabelle Broadbent has been named the National Female Athlete of 2023 by the Puerto Rico Masters Athletics Association. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico but lives in the USA now.

The long-distance runner collected several titles and records in 2023 running on the track and road. She ran 41 races, won three Golds at the Puerto Rico National Championships, and took seven medals from seven events at the multi-nation NCCMA, coming second in the USA Track Mid Atlantic Grand Prix series. Upon receiving this latest award, she said, “What an honour it was to receive the 2023 Female Athlete of the Year award from the Puerto Rico Masters Association. During my acceptance speech I was overcome by emotion. It was such a moving, defining moment in my life!”

When she is not competing, Broadbent works as a food scientist and runs a business called Verde Ops. She became vegan in 2010, and she said this to Greta Vegan Athletes about it:  “I am a Food Scientist, I have seen behind that veil, I know where food comes from. I have been in the places where animals are raised and slaughtered, I have seen the highly processed food production, I have walked hundreds of food manufacturing plants I have also walked many acres of fields where actual food is grown and have seen the negative environmental impacts of animal agriculture.”

She says this about Puerto Rico: “[it’s] a small island with an obesity epidemic, along with all the diet-related chronic diseases. A small island that imports more than 85% of the food it consumes. I want to change that!” she says. “I want nutritional food security for the island of Puerto Rico! I want people to move their bodies, to be physically active. I want to redefine what is possible, what health, vitality, and strength can look/be like in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond.”
