On 23rd January 2024, three bulls rescued from the home of a convicted animal abuser were taken to Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve in Montague Township, New Jersey, US. The bulls Artie, Steve and Robert, who were found with no food or water, will now spend the rest of their lives saved at the vegan sanctuary,  founded in 2013 by Gabrielle Stubbert and Peter Nussbaum.

The bulls had been found at the Long Island home of Carlos Lauro along with about 100 other animals, including 10 piglets, a dozen waterfowl, and dozens of sick and injured chickens, sheep, goats, and a rabbit. According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, Lauro pleaded guilty to killing a German Shepherd with a rifle and was sentenced to one year in jail and a 20-year ban on owning or possessing animals. Tierney said, “This kind of cruelty will not be tolerated by my office, nor the people of Suffolk County, and the swift sentence of one year in jail demonstrates that. Let this serve as a warning to anyone seeking to injure animals.”

The investigation began on 10th January 2024, when a paralyzed young German Shepherd was taken to the veterinary hospital a Westbury, New York, with a gunshot wound to his head. Suffolk County detectives raided Lauro’s property and found, in addition to several dead animals, five Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd mix dogs, a Border Collie, two German Shepherds, and other animals. According to officials, about one month earlier, Lauro had shot and killed another German Shepherd, a 6-month-old puppy. Lauro was arrested on 11th January and one week later he pleaded guilty. The Humane Long Island has been looking for homes for all the animals confiscated from the property.
