On 16th February 2023, the Turkish photographer and animal rights activist Havva Zorlu, who was awarded the We Animals Media Animal Photojournalism Fellowship in 2023, began an exhibition of her work on the  KUNSTMATRIX website. Havva’s Fellowship focus was on her home in Türkiye where she documented the dominant systems of animal exploitation, ranging from dairy farming to live animal markets. This virtual exhibition, which creates a 3-D interactive experience on the website as if you were in a physical exhibition, offers a glimpse into her unparalleled body of work.

The photographs of the exhibition include a horse decorated with colourful beads and tassels waiting to be used for tourist entertainment, three newly purchased goslings sitting grasped in a village woman’s hands, 80,000 laying hens in a two-storey shed at an industrial egg farm live in twelve rows of cramped battery cages, a rooster pulling on the twine tethering his leg to a cage at a weekly live animal market, and a cow brought from Europe and destined for a Turkish dairy farm.

Animal Photojournalism Fellowship helps photojournalists to document the experiences of animals used for food, fashion, entertainment, tradition and research. The Fellowship aims to address this reporting gap by funding and mentoring emerging animal photojournalists. People can donate to the We Animals Media programme to help the next generation of photojournalists tell these critical stories.
