On 2nd June 2024, Benidorm, the coastal city in the Valencian Community, saw hundreds of vegan activists participating in a march to commemorate National Animal Rights Day

This event, which has been held previously for three years, was part of similar events that took place in many cities around the world, under the auspices of NARD (National Animals Rights Day). The organisers said, “The event intends to give voice to all those diverse species of animals that, through different forms of exploitation, have been silenced, with the torture and death of which they are victims every day; it is an event to make visible these victims who die in the most desolate oblivion, far from the eyes of those people who promote speciesism, defined by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), as discrimination by species against animals.”

As part of the event, a memorial ceremony was held to pay tribute to the billions of animals that die at human hands each year. The march ended with the reading of a manifesto to call for an end to speciesism and with acts of vegan outreach in which images of animal exploitation were shown on screens. Activists from the groups Animal Save (Valencia and Dénia), Youth Climate Save Valencia, Animanaturalis, AACME and the Perla shelter, as well as other anti-speciesists at an individual level joined the event.

In a statement, the organisers said, “Each and every animal used by human beings is condemned to an imposed life of misery from beginning to end, as they suffer from their first breath to their last without having the possibility of escape. In fact, many people confess to us that they would not be able to kill the animal or even witness it.”
