If running a marathon seems like a mammoth task, consider the feat achieved in ten days by vegan runner Budjargal Byambaa.

Budjargal is a veteran of fixed-time races, where runners compete to cover the greatest distance until time runs out. Running for ten days, he completed 817.5 miles or 1,315.6 kilometres, which equates to over 32 marathons.

It’s the fourth win at this ten-day event. The same meeting also features a six-day race, which Budjargal has won before. This year, his distance after six days was more than the winner of the six-day race – and he kept going!

Budjargal won the ten-day race by 74 miles. In doing so, he beat the Taiwanese record holder and the four-time winner of the world’s longest footrace of 5,000 km. It’s the latest in a series of epic wins by the US-resident Mongolian athlete.

In January 2019, Budjargal gave up eating all animal products for reasons related to health and athletic performance. He also says regarding his veganism, “It helps me to transcend my physical self, moving to the next stage of my spiritual development and growth.”

Budjargal sees running as a spiritual experience, enabling spiritual growth. When asked about his ability to maintain such a resilient mindset in these extreme physical challenges, Budjargal said, “Long-distance running is different than any other type of running. It needs not only physical strength, it needs my inner strength. My thought about inner strength is, it is so powerful and it can give me much, much more strength than the physical strength.

Becoming vegan helped me to find my inner strength.” The runner eats mainly raw fruit and vegetables, fueling himself during races with apples, grapes, bananas, oranges, coconut meat and water. As his collection of wins over immense distances grows, who could doubt that his strategy is working?
