On 23rd June 2024, animal rights activists confronted Tyler Florence, an American chef and television host of several Food Network shows, during a cookbook signing in the city of Napa, California, US, protesting Florence’s partnership with Petaluma Poultry, a subsidiary of poultry giant Perdue Farms.

On three different occasions, activists belonging to the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere interrupted the chef serving guests from a buffet by shouting at him to “cut ties now,” while holding large yellow signs reading “Stop Supporting Petaluma Poultry’s Criminal Animal Abuse.” Patch.com reported that Florence let out a small yelp and appeared to quickly flee toward a nearby building. More activists confronted Florence after the buffet, while he was on stage recording a spot for cookbook podcast Salt & Spine. DxE protested at multiple stops along Florence’s cookbook tour.

In 2018, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) released footage showing allegedly sick birds laying across the floor at a facility they said is run by one of Petaluma Poultry’s contractors. Zoe Rosenberg, one of the group’s activists, is currently facing felony charges in Sonoma County for allegedly dressing as a factory worker, breaking into Petaluma Poultry and removing chickens in June 2023. Rosenberg said in a statement, “If Tyler Florence had seen what I’ve seen in Petaluma Poultry factory farms and its slaughterhouse, he would agree this criminal animal abuse is unacceptable.”

On 13th June 2023, several DxE activists rescued 18 chickens from a Petaluma Poultry processing plant they had already visited and rescued others from. They dressed in garb similar to that of employees to go undetected, and intercepted an incoming flatbed truck that was transporting live chickens to the Lakeville Highway slaughterhouse in Sonoma County.
