On 17th April 2026, a newborn lamb, later named Shahar, was rescued and given a permanent home at Freedom Farm Sanctuary in Israel after being found abandoned shortly after birth. The lamb was discovered alone inside a cardboard box, still wet and with his umbilical cord attached. According to the sanctuary, he had been left moments after being born, crying out with no mother in sight. A member of the public intervened, taking him in and providing immediate care during his first critical days.
Freedom Farm Sanctuary described the rescue in an Instagram post, highlighting the vulnerability of the young animal and the compassion shown by his rescuer, saying, “Last Friday, this tiny lamb was found abandoned just moments after birth — still wet, his umbilical cord attached, crying inside a cardboard box. Alone… Luckily, an incredible woman found him, took him in, and cared for him over the past few days.”
The sanctuary explained that the woman initially believed the baby was a goat and fed him accordingly, before arranging for him to be transferred into their care. Once at the sanctuary, he was given the name Shahar, in recognition of a long-time volunteer.
In a follow-up post, the organisation introduced him to supporters: “Meet Shahar. He was born less than a week ago, and in that short time he was already abandoned, found by a kind woman who rescued him, and brought to us. Here, he will finally have what every animal deserves — a safe home for life, full of care, comfort, and love.”
Shahar is now receiving specialised care, including appropriate nutrition and medical attention, as he adjusts to life at the sanctuary. Freedom Farm Sanctuary has appealed for support to help cover the costs of his early care, including colostrum and feeding supplies, which are essential during the first days of a lamb’s life.
