Little Dude arrived at Barn Sanctuary at just four days old.
He was the tiniest piglet, and more fragile than he appeared. His back leg was badly infected. He couldn’t nurse from his mother. Due to his condition, the chances he’d survive his early years were slim.
However, he was in the care of a sanctuary that wasn’t willing to give up on his life.
The Hospital Weeks
Little Dude was rushed to hospital. He stayed for weeks. His spirit was notably stronger than his body. He was refusing to be defined by his physical fragility.
The infection, however, did not resolve. It persisted despite treatment and time. Eventually, a decision was made in order to save his life – to remove the infected bone.
What Happened Next
Little Dude grew into a stronger boy who seemed to reject the struggles of his past. His strength was so powerful that his bone grew back naturally. His body did what bodies sometimes do when given enough time, care, and enough reason to keep going. Paired with his mental strength, he recovered,
What He Loves
Little Dude has one preference above all others: human company.
The people who stayed up for him and took him to hospital and refused to give up on him are now his safe place. He seeks them out and has made the love he was given the centre of his world.
What He Represents
Little Dude bounced back despite predictions of his future. His resilience demonstrates that we can never give up on others, even if there’s a sliver of a chance they’ll prevail.
Sanctuaries are places where resources can be thrown into the ring. They can give everything they’ve got to fight alongside their residents.
The sanctuary did not give up on him when the odds were poor, or when the infection seemed to be winning.
And Little Dude didn’t give up either.
