QUICK FACTS

Science indicates that fish are sentient and have the capacity to feel pain and suffer.

The world produces around 200 million tonnes of fish and other sea animals every year, equating to trillions of sentient individuals. This comes from a combination of wild caught fish and fish farming.

Fish are commonly farmed in very cramped and overcrowded enclosures where they suffer disease, parasitic infestations, and exposure to antibiotics and other harmful contaminants.

Little to no legal protections protect fish on fish farms. They are subjected to violent and painful slaughter methods, such as suffocation, blunt force trauma or stabbings to the head, electrical stunning, cutting their gills, and ice-chilling, which causes fish to go into shock.

Commercial fishing uses large nets and fishing lines to remove fish from their habitats on a large scale. In addition to the targeted fish, many endangered and vulnerable animals are trapped and killed by the fishing equipment. These animals are collectively called "bycatch" and commonly include dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and seabirds.
