Kangaroos are Australia’s primary native herbivore and one of its national symbols and have been essential to the survival of its native forests and grasslands for at least 50 million years.
However, shooting kangaroos is legal in the country, under the excuse of exaggerated claims of overpopulation and competition with farmers.
In fact, these marsupials reproduce slowly, have a high mortality rate, and are now facing local extinction in some areas. Furthermore, credible studies have found that kangaroos rarely visit grain crops.
Due to the killing of millions of kangaroos for commercial purposes and the fact that they can be shot where they are considered “pests” without the need to prove it, kangaroos are said to be the victims of the largest slaughter of terrestrial wildlife in the world.
Kangaroos are very social and suffer pain and stress at the death or injury of a loved one. Adults play an integral role in the family’s cohesion and in the very young’s protection and education. When they leave, their entire society is affected.
You can help kangaroos by refusing to eat their meat, leather and any other products derived from them, but also from other animals. By opting for a vegan life you can reduce your ecological footprint by more than half, giving the planet and all the animals that live on it a break.
