We would like to talk about ‘zero-grazed cows’ 🐮💔
In the UK, where we imagine cows to be outdoors, living what we are led to believe is a ‘natural’ life, it is estimated that 20% of dairy cows spend their ENTIRE LIVES indoors at factory/mega style farms. A side to the dairy industry which has been well hidden from UK consumers 😔
Peter Stevenson, the chief policy adviser at the charity Compassion in World Farming, said: “The public still sees cows as being outdoors in fields and are unaware of their high yields to which they have been pushed and the fact that quite a chunk of them are zero-grazed. This intensive part of the dairy sector is an utter disgrace.”
Shockingly, in the U.S – pasture-based dairy farming was once the norm, but data shows that fewer than 3% of dairy cows are raised pasture-based. This could be down to the fact that nearly half of Americas land mass is already attributed to animal farming, and the tactic of intensive farming to cope with rising demand.
Welfare issues with intensive farming are growing, with cows developing lameness and mastitis due to increasing yields from selective breeding. Milk production per cow has more than doubled in the past 40-50 years, meaning that more and more cows are being slaughtered after only 3 to 4 pregnancies. 😱
Our appetite for Dairy is taking its toll on the cows like never before, and we must stop justifying it. Dairy may very well be, the cruelest of industries there is… 😔💔
