QUICK FACTS

A landmark study conducted by The London School of Economics and Political Science includes strong evidence that lobsters, crabs, and octopuses are sentient, meaning the animals can experience pain, distress, or harm.

Lobsters date back more than 360 million years, and individual lobsters can live for decades, possibly over a century. Yet today, hundreds of millions of young lobsters are eaten worldwide, resulting in some populations becoming depleted or overfished.

Once the lobsters arrive at their destination, they’re kept in small water tanks, refrigerated, or displayed until sale. While fully conscious, they are most often boiled or steamed alive, though some are cut or dismembered before being grilled, broiled, or subjected to other cooking methods.

Almost all lobsters eaten globally are wild-caught, with the vast majority lured and captured by baited pots or traps. Once retrieved, their bodies are snapped in half to cook and sell their tails, or their claws are banded together before being shipped around the world to various businesses.

Some crustaceans, such as crabs, shrimp, prawns, and a very small percentage of lobsters, are raised on factory farms, where they are subjected to many cruel practices.
