On 30th May 2026, Little Red Barn Sanctuary in Canada launched an urgent appeal to save Coke and Rye, two 24-year-old brother horses, from being sent to slaughter at an auction taking place that same day. The brothers had worked their entire lives for humans and the sanctuary said they deserved retirement rather than the abattoir.
By 31st May, enough donations had come in for the sanctuary to secure Coke and Rye’s freedom at the auction. The Little Red Barn Sanctuary said, “Our boys are coming home. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated for their freedom, their lives are forever changed because of your kindness.”
On 2nd June, the sanctuary confirmed the brothers had arrived, and by 3rd June they were reported to be settling in well, coming up to their carers for pets and snacks ahead of a veterinary check-up.
The story took an unexpected turn on 10th June, when Coke and Rye’s original guardians, Bill and Adele, recognised the horses from the sanctuary’s posts online. Bill and Adele had cared for Coke and Rye since the horses were four months old and had spent years searching for them after losing contact with the person who had been keeping them, who they believed had since died. The couple decided to bring the brothers home for good, arriving with photographs of them as foals and pointing out that their names were still carved into the barn. Bill and Adele paid the auction price and the veterinary costs themselves, meaning the donations raised by supporters went instead towards two other animals at the sanctuary, Patches and Petunia, as well as Sugar, a 20-year-old miniature pony recently relinquished by her previous guardian.
The Little Red Barn Sanctuary said, “What an incredible ending to Rye and Coke’s rescue journey. Thank you to everyone who donated to bring Rye and Coke to sanctuary. However for these two lucky boys that was not the end of their story.”
