1. That “Luxury” Bag Once Had a Beating Heart

Behind every leather jacket, wallet, or pair of boots is someone who wanted to live.
Cows, goats, sheep, and even dogs and cats have been killed for their skin – often at just a few years old. If the stunning process wasn’t successful (which is made more likely due to the speed of the slaughter line), then the animal will still be conscious while their skin is being ripped from their bodies.
They don’t die instantly. They die terrified.
Animal Equality’s investigation uncovered widespread cruelty in India’s dairy-linked slaughterhouses, which are a prominent source of the world’s leather, coming off the literal backs of buffaloes and cows.
2. The “Byproduct” Myth That Lets Us Look Away

Leather is often sold as a harmless byproduct of the meat industry – but that’s a marketing trick.
In places like India, cows are not typically considered a food source. With this in mind, how could their skin be a by-product of the meat industry if their flesh isn’t being used for meat?
These are often separate industries. It’s also a strange comment that shows how we see them as objects. We wouldn’t think it’s a ‘waste’ to not use a dog’s skin when they’re buried after they pass away, typically.
3. The Hidden Lives Behind Leather

Before their premeditated deaths, these animals commonly live in crowded feedlots or factory farms where disease, mutilation, and neglect are the norm.
Tail docking, castration, and dehorning are done without anaesthesia. Calves are separated from their mothers hours after birth – families torn apart, and pain is inflicted for this product that people find useful or pleasing.
4. The Cycle of Suffering Never Ends

Millions of animals are trapped in this cycle each year.
Their bodies are reduced to commodities; their individuality erased.
The fashion industry refers to their skin as “premium.” But there’s nothing premium about pain.
5. Compassion Is Always in Fashion

The best part? You can still love style without making animals pay the ultimate price.
Today’s vegan leathers can be beautiful, durable, and innovative, and can be made from mushrooms, pineapple leaves, apple skins, and recycled materials.
Companies are increasingly moving away from animal skin, for example, in car interiors or for fashion, which can be attributed to environmental concerns, pressure campaigns against businesses, and other factors.
Check for labels like “vegan” or “plant-based” on the label. The next time you reach for animal leather, remember – they paid a much heavier price than you ever would.
