On January 21st, 2025, a dolphin was found dead on the beach of Mar del Tuyú, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a tourist removed him from the water. The animal, who was near the shore, was taken in the arms of a young man as a crowd gathered around him.
Lorena Cervetto, a witness to the event who shared images on her social networks, said, “The dolphin died in his arms, surrounded by curious people. I don’t know if we really know how to act in these situations.”
Augusto Giachetti, Undersecretary of Civil Defense of the Coast, confirmed that the dolphin belonged to the Chilean species. He explained that sea currents usually drag these animals to the coast and that this type of event greatly impacts people. In addition, he recalled the importance of not interfering with marine fauna. He told La Nación, “Sea lions and seals, for example, usually rest on the beach and it is key to keep their distance.” He recommended that, in similar cases, the Mundo Marino Foundation or Civil Defense (103) be contacted instead of intervening without knowledge.
A similar episode occurred recently in Mar de Cobo, near Mar del Plata, when a dolphin of the Franciscan species, in danger of extinction, appeared lifeless. According to the Argentine Fauna Foundation, these animals are usually caught in fishing nets.
Juan Lorenzani, president of the foundation, said, “The Franciscan dolphin is one of the most endangered species in the world and, if urgent action is not taken, it could disappear within a few years.” On the other hand, in 2022, another Franciscan dolphin was caught on video when a person wrapped him in a blanket and took him away. This fact generated indignation and rejection among environmental organisations, which demanded greater awareness and protection for these animals.
