Hangry Planet, the plant-based convenience store operating on a fuel forecourt in San Bruno, California, US, and marketed as North America’s first fully vegan petrol station shop, has been sold for more than $12 million, as first reported by CBS News. Founder Bobak Bakhtiari told CBS that the sale included both the property and the business, and that the sum exceeded what he had originally anticipated the site would be worth.
The roughly 1,500 sq ft store sits at 1199 El Camino Real, opposite the former Tanforan mall, and has stocked only plant-based goods since 2022. Its range mirrors that of a typical forecourt shop rather than a specialist health outlet: hot dogs, crisps, breakfast sandwiches made with Beyond Meat, JUST Egg and Follow Your Heart cheese, mushroom jerky, burritos, prebiotic sodas, and dairy-free soft serve.
Bakhtiari said sales fell by around 20% once animal products were taken off the shelves, a period during which he wondered whether converting the shop had been a mistake. Trade later climbed by roughly 30% as vegan and plant-based shoppers began travelling specifically to the store rather than treating it as a stop on an existing journey, turning a site that had depended on passing fuel custom into a destination in its own right.
Tyler MacNiven, a regular customer from Sunnyvale, said, “A gas station convenience store that is entirely plant based, you just don’t ever hear that marriage happening, and you might not expect that… It really works out.”
Bobak Bakhtiari, founder of Hangry Planet, said, “I felt like, with a high-traffic, junk-food milieu of convenience stores, it’s the perfect environment to help educate and transform people’s habits.”
According to Hoodline, which cited Hangry Planet’s own business listing, Brar Pacific Oil took over running the site from 11th May 2026. Neither party has confirmed whether the fully plant-based range will continue under the new operator.
