On 22nd September 2026, REthink ANIMALS, a newly launched Greek organisation focused on Farmed Animals, announced an investigation into pig farming in Greece based on material from 27 farms across the country. Titled This Is Gyros, it is the group’s first major campaign since its public launch, and it was carried out in collaboration with UNLOCKED, an investigative nonprofit with extensive experience documenting animal agriculture.

The investigators gathered more than three hours of video and over 100 photographs between March and May 2026. According to the organisation, the footage documents repeated and serious concerns in different regions of Greece. Pigs who had died were left in open pits, where dogs, cats, and birds could get to them, and other pigs had serious injuries and health problems. The material also suggests poor hygiene and biosecurity, along with major problems in the management of manure and liquid waste, including overflows and waste spreading into the surrounding environment. Some of the facilities documented also appear to have received EU or national public funding. An eight-minute film of the investigation is available on YouTube in Greek, with English and Italian subtitles.

Elli Stourna, Co-Founder and Director of Strategy and Development at REthink ANIMALS, said, “We have already generated significant media attention in Greece, but we now want to take the investigation beyond the Greek media cycle and into the European conversation. We believe international visibility could be particularly important in increasing scrutiny, encouraging more journalists to investigate the issue, and creating pressure for Greek authorities to formally respond to the findings.”

REthink ANIMALS works to drive social and systemic change through investigations, public mobilisation, and advocacy. UNLOCKED is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable individuals of our time, particularly those involved in the food production system.
