Geoff, a goat who was found bound, starved, dehydrated, and covered with faeces and urine in a residential back alley, is recovering at The Alice Sanctuary in Alberta, Canada, after a rescue coordinated with Calgary Humane.
The sanctuary explained in an Instagram post on 16th June 2026 that the goat transfer was arranged the previous week. Geoff was rushed into emergency medical care, where his wounds were tended to, and he received fluids, pain management, food, and rest. Moore Equine and an aftercare foster home then helped him heal, and the sanctuary was contacted once his recovery time had finished.
The Alice Sanctuary said, “Even though Geoff has been through so much pain and abuse, he is so sweet, gentle and loving.”
In arrival, Geoff was placed in a monitoring stall. The team quickly recognised that he has trauma anxiety, especially around food. To help him feel calmer, they checked on him often and took him around on a lead. The team also noticed that Geoff smelled and behaved like an intact buck, although he had no obvious signs of having been castrated. In a post on 22 June, the sanctuary said he most likely had one or both testicles inside his body, a condition called cryptorchidism. Even if he was sterile, the team was unwilling to risk him being far too active with the females living there, so he was kept separated and given time in a fenced yard to graze.
On 21st September, Geoff went to Moore Equine for surgery. In a post two days later, the sanctuary said the surgical team found and carefully removed his hidden right testicle. The sanctuary hopes his buck behaviour will tone down, and it plans to start integrating him with other goats a month after the operation.
His recovery was not smooth. On 24th September, Geoff was taken back to Moore Equine after he stopped eating, drinking, urinating, and defecating. He had two ultrasounds, a catheter and a tube were tried for fluids, and he was given a pain reliever. By 28 September, the sanctuary reported that he was stable and continuing to improve.
