Veganism has become a hot topic in recent years, and while some may still think of it as a passing trend, the truth is that it’s here to stay.

More and more people are choosing to adopt a vegan lifestyle — and they’re sticking with it for the long haul. But what makes veganism more than just a fad? There are plenty of reasons why people are making the switch and keeping it up for good. Ready to discover what’s really behind the rise of veganism? Here are 7 reasons why it’s more than just a trend.

1. The One Reason You Really Need – The Animals 🐾

Let’s start with the only reason we need – people don’t want to exploit animals. We are not the centre of the universe – the lives of others mean something to them, too. Being vegan means avoiding the exploitation of other animals. And who wants to not take that option if it’s there?

2. Animals Feel Pain 🤕

Despite previous confusion, animals have been declared sentient. We now understand that, like us, they are experiencing the world around them, vulnerable to sensations produced by their environment. That means we can condemn them to horrors and do so if we don’t pay for the vegan option.

3. We’re More Educated Than Ever 📚

Where it may have been the case that we told our parents and they cried out of horror that we were going vegan – worrying that we’d die of starvation- we now understand that plant-based diets are suitable for humans. We know the benefits of supplementation for all and know that we can use technology instead of using animals like we did beforehand. Knowing this, it’s harder to make excuses and not stick to a philosophy that seeks to avoid exploitation.

4. More Vegan Options Than Ever Before 🍔

Veganism was once a challenge if you went out to eat. But now? It’s never been easier. From plant-based burgers to oat milk lattes, it’s more convenient than ever to stick to a vegan lifestyle. Cosmetics and household products are now labelled and certified vegan for more conscious shopping. With every option that becomes available, the excuses weaken.

5. Striving to Be a Better Person

We can accept that if Person A kicks a dog every Monday and Person B does not, Person B is, based on that fact alone, a better person. We are more morally good when we don’t subject others to such atrocities, and in the current climate, many people are looking for ways to improve themselves and not have such a negative impact on their surroundings. Being vegan is one significant way to achieve this, just due to how horrific the consequences are for animals if we continue not considering them.

6. No Need To Feel Guilty About It Anymore 🙏

Many people feel severe guilt about paying for cosmetics that were tested on bunnies or eating the body of an animal who they know endured a gas chamber before being butchered. However, if you go vegan, you don’t have to feel guilty about it anymore – nobody likes to carry guilt with them.

7. Community Support Makes It Easier 🤝

It can be challenging when we’re online, hearing so many comments about how we’ll become emaciated, how we’re too much, or that we’ll end up on a desert island with a pig; so much negative feedback can mess with your head. But the support of a thriving and passionate community, filled with science-based researchers and logical, philosophical thinkers can really help put things back into perspective. People may stick to it long-term because they feel more supported in that endeavor.

Veganism is more than just a trend — it’s a philosophy that has outlived generations, long before the name was coined. It is becoming easier than ever to live a life that considers other animals. So, next time somebody says it’s just a fad, remember how simple it is to include animals in your circle of compassion.
