On the 23rd of August 2025, Edgar’s Mission, an animal sanctuary in Australia, rescued a brown-and-white Hereford calf named Ace Ventura after discovering him in a severely anaemic state, unable to walk or even flinch for at least a week.
The rescue unfolded as the sanctuary faced a harrowing dilemma: a “Sophie’s choice moment,” as they described on social media, between saving a sheep whose eye had been cruelly pecked out and a sickly calf starved of care. Immediate attention was given to the sheep’s urgent pain, but as soon as Dublin, the sheep, was stabilised, the Edgar’s Mission team redirected their efforts towards Ace Ventura.
Initially, Ace Ventura lay in the straw, his swollen limbs motionless, but his spirit undiminished. The team at Edgar’s Mission wrote, “With each wide-eyed gaze, he stole our hearts and tucked them safely under the straw where he lay.”
The collective hope was rewarded on the 24th of August when Edgar’s Mission announced, “Ace. Walked. On. His. Own.” The joyous post recounted, “Yes, you read that right! The little calf who could not even flinch his limbs just days ago has taken his first steps. And we couldn’t be prouder of him.” The shared video, though wobbly in its excitement, showed Ace’s determined steps.
Reflecting on the unfolding miracle, Edgar’s Mission posted, “That Ace, against all odds, didn’t succumb to the brutal weather, starvation, parasites and motherlessness… our team never once faltered in their resolve that Ace was worth it. And now, perhaps the greatest miracle of all: Ace is the captain of his own adventures. Even if, for now, they are only a few wobbly steps, they are his.”
As further footage was shared on the 25th of August, the sanctuary attributed Ace Ventura’s progress not to magic, but to the “power of kindness.” They said, “Because miracles and magic happen when kindness leads the way. Rock on, little buddy. Rock on! You are a superstar.”
